November 2018 Issue

Dear Friends,

Thanksgiving - beyond the turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie - is a favorite holiday at the Cifelli house. Not only is it the one time of year, we gather - family and friends - all together. It's also a reminder to pause, breathe and reflect on our lives, and all the good vibes. We have so much to be thankful for - both personally, our health, family, friends; and professionally, our JCR team, collection of extraordinary properties, and of course, our A-list travel advisor friends.

In this month of thanksgiving and giving thanks, we wish each of you a festive celebration. Coupled with reflective downtime - quiet moments to look back upon the year's abundance. As each of our hoteliers has so eloquently shared, below, in our now-annual gratitude issue.

Warm Regards,
Jaj and Anthony

HOTEL LE TOINY GRATEFUL TO REOPEN

Hotel Le Toiny

"We are so very grateful," says Hotel Le Toiny's Felipe Sandoval. "After Hurricane Irma hit St. Barth in September 2017, it was crucial for the Hotel Le Toiny team to get back on track as soon as possible. We are so grateful for the amazing hard work the whole team put in - maintenance and housekeeping teams assisting the construction team; management promoting our beloved property around the world. It was a huge challenge to be ready with our existing and (eight new) suites but we did it - welcoming our first guests on October 15, 2018. We can't wait for this upcoming season."

THE SAFARI COLLECTION HELPS ITS OWN

The Safari Collection: Sasaab

It was a year ago, Thanksgiving time, when Sasaab manager, Agnes, discovered that one of her staff had a deaf daughter - Linet, age ten, who had never been to school. Agnes did all she could to help the family: taking Linet for hearing tests in a nearby town, exploring possible medical treatments and - with help from The Safari Collection - enrolling Linet in a special school for the deaf. Recently, her life changed even more after The Safari Collection arranged for Linet and her mother to leave their traditional Samburu village and visit a specialized clinic in Nairobi. Here, doctors, fitted her with small hearing aids - enabling Linet to listen to the world around her for the very first time. Afterward, Linet was taken to Giraffe Manor where she received some very slobbery kisses from Stacey, the giraffe. What an incredible moment.

LAUCALA THANKFUL FOR TURTLE'S RECOVERY

Laucala Island

When Laucala Island staffers found a turtle, weak and tired; injured in two places, they knew they had to save her. "Toni the Turtle" had a hole on the top of her shell and a long crack near her left flipper," says Laucala's Funga Ganilau. "We applied honey to her wounds - while calling in a vet who treated her with antibiotic injections and antiseptic cream. Toni is currently at Treasure Island, rehabilitating with other turtles - slowly recovering and under constant assessment. We are thankful for all who volunteered their time in Toni's recovery and are hopeful she heals 100 percent." Ultimately, Toni will be released from the same spot she was found on Laucala Island.
