What Jaj Loves
March 2019 Issue

Dear Friends,

When it comes to favorites - favorite places, spaces and views - our JCR collection is rich with options. In fact, narrowing down just one favorite, per property, proved so difficult, we asked our hoteliers to do the honors for us. Their charge: pinpoint the best, guest-preferred views and gathering places. Some we knew and have experienced firsthand. But a few were unknown. And, as result, have been added to our own to-do-and-see list. Enjoy.

Warm Regards,
Jaj and Anthony

SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD AT SASAAB LODGE

The Safari Collection: Sasaab

A hands-down favorite: Sasaab Lodge's legendary 'Sundowner Rock' with its panoramic views over the Ewaso Nyiro River Valley. The scene is made all the more impressive by the spectacularly dressed Samburu warriors who lead the way - in decorative traditional dress - to watch the African sun go down. Injecting the sky with flaming orange, deep crimson and streaks of luminescent pink.

WHAREKAUHAU'S FAMOUS LOOKOUT

Wharekauhau

For Wharekauhau's Richard Rooney, the 'Lookout' - which looks out over cliffs and dramatic Palliser Bay - is among his favorite places. "On calm nights, we go out there for cocktails. Sometimes, when the clouds are right, we take hot cocoa and watch the stars," says Richard. "It is a place that allows great contemplation, as you gaze out toward the open ocean and onward to Antarctica. A great place to just relax and reset yourself."

LAUCALA ISLAND'S SWIMMING VIEWS

Laucala Island

There are many viable 'best views' on Fiji's ultra-photogenic Laucala Island. But one of the most adored and talked about comes from inside the resort's glass-end lap pool. Looking out to the beach, the ocean and horizon. Doesn't get much better.

MOUNTAIN HIKES BY GOLDEN DOOR

Golden Door

Every morning at Golden Door brings different mountain treks - a choice of three-, five- or seven-mile hikes. The excursions begin in darkness - with the first stretch of pink, then yellow, lighting the way past orange groves, avocado trees and strawberry-guava bushes. To the mountaintop lake, with its see-forever views. And meditative labyrinth walk.

HOTEL LE TOINY A MASTERPIECE

Hotel Le Toiny

Hotel Le Toiny's newly debuted villa suites have become an instant favorite - with their stunning sea and pool views. But the 'common' areas of the hotel, which are far from common, are mesmerizing too. Like walking into a painting. Exquisite. Chic. A French masterpiece.

CLAYOQUOT'S ALL-GLASS LOUNGE

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge

Inspired by the resort's much-loved tugboat, the SS Ivanhoe, Clayoquot's Ivanhoe glass lounge rests at the very edge of the estuary, at the point where the Bedwell River spills into the Pacific Ocean. Here - with handcrafted cocktails by the fire - guests lounge inside, watching bears, eagles, blue herons, otters and seals. Sigh.

PHUM BAITANG'S STUNNING BEAUTY

Zannier Hotels: Phum Baitang

There's no one specific place or space at Zannier Hotels' Phum Baitang in Cambodia. But rather the collective view - of rice fields stretching seemingly forever. And the fiery orange-red sunset view from the resort's cigar and cocktail lounge. Unbeatable.

Hotel Esprit Saint Germain feels like a Parisian home. And that feeling extends to its neighborhood and favorite leafy park: nearby Luxembourg Gardens, one of the city's most peaceful sanctuaries. SHEEN FALLS' WATER VIEWS

Sheen Falls

It's one of the best seats in the house. A place to watch salmon make their way upstream; listen to the cascading waterfalls. But the experience transcends inside too. As every bedroom and public area at Sheen Falls Lodge overlooks either the waterfalls or Kenmare bay. Peaceful, tranquil. And oh so soothing.
