What Jaj Loves
April 2019 Issue

Dear Friends,

April, at JCR, is synonymous with our annual roadshow. The time of year our hoteliers circumnavigate the globe to join us - and travel advisors in select cities - for a whirlwind week of meet-and-greets, lunch-and-learns and vibey cocktail parties. For those unable to join our festivities or those residing in cities not on this year's tour (we will be touching down in Chicago, Austin, Dallas, Orange County California, LA and Santa Barbara), we asked our hoteliers to share a few fun or unknown facts about their properties. Even we were surprised by a few. Enjoy.

Warm Regards,
Jaj and Anthony

KATIKIES MAINTAINS WHITE-WASHED BEAUTY

Katikies Santorini

Katikies Santorini's beautiful whitewashed architecture doesn't 'just happen,' according to Katikies' Nikos Georgiadis. The hotel spends approximately $29,000 a year on paint for its white exterior. And employs a full-time painter. "Eight hours a day, starting at 6 am, Savvas, our painter, adds fresh coats to the hotel's 34 rooms, two pools, and various common areas," says Nikos. "No easy task, as he does his work without disturbing hotel guests." Beautiful.

EYE-CATCHING GREENWICH

Greenwich Hotel

Nothing is random at The Greenwich Hotel. "Every object, architectural detail and furnishing has a story behind it," says The Greenwich's Katy Horne. Examples: the fireplace in the main dining room of Locanda Verde is modeled after the one in owner Robert DeNiro's upstate residence. Ceiling beams (in the lobby and drawing room) are made from reclaimed wood rescued from a Civil War-era factory, slated for demolition. And every guest room has a one-of-a-kind Tibetan silk or antique rug.

CLAYOQUOT GOLD

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge

This past season, Clayoquot struck gold. While hiking the resort's popular Penny Falls, a guest stepped off the trail for a moment, as something - what he thought may be a bear den - caught his eye," recalls Clayoquot's Antonella Puglisi. "Curious, but not eager to enter the large hole himself, he informed his guide. And later, they hiked to the spot for further examination. Lo and behold it was a real gold mine - approximately six feet tall and 60 feet deep." Wow.

HOTEL LE TOINY BUILT ON ORIGINAL SETTLEMENT

Hotel Le Toiny

"Hotel Le Toiny's chic beach area is actually built on a fishing settlement dating to the early 1800s," says Le Toiny's Felipe Sandoval. "Our boutique and wine cellar by the beach are indeed original 'case au vent' - homes built directly over the root of a kapok tree, the only Caribbean tree with a root deep enough to withstand all hurricanes."

New to BodyHoliday's ITAL organic restaurant and farm: a bee hive. "The original hive was relocated by expert bee keepers from a nearby property," says BodyHoliday's Rebecca Platt. "And is tenderly being nurtured so in time it will produce its own organic honey." Sweet.

Tierra Patagonia is renowned for its incredible views. "But a lot of people don't think about sunrise views," says Tierra's Sarah Ranfone. LAUCALA ISLAND NOT ALWAYS PRIVATE

Laucala Island

Today, one of the most exclusive private islands in the world, Fiji's Laucala Island was not always so. "Back in the 1800s, during tribal warfare times, the people of Laucala Island were not loyal to their chief, the Tui Cakau," says Laucala's Funga Ganilau. "So the chief sold the island, which became private. And the people were exiled to other parts of the northern district."

THE GOLDEN DOOR GLOW

Golden Door

"In 1958, the 14 rooms of the newly created Golden Door were reserved for invited guests who would experience something totally new - real sweat-producing exercise," says Golden Door's Kathy Van Ness. "Although ladies back then did not 'sweat.' They 'glowed,' thus starting the phrase that endured for many years - 'the golden glow.' Eventually the phrase came to mean glowing with good health."

NAMESAKE WHAREKAUHAU

Wharekauhau

"Wharekauhau (forry-co-ho) translates to 'place of knowledge' and references a time when young men, transitioning to adulthood, would come and spend time," says Wharekauhau's Richard Rooney. "When the early European settlers came to the region and broke the land in for farming, they had such respect for the energy of the land as well as for the tanga te whenua (people of the land), that they kept the name. In the early stages of the lodge, circa 1980, many guests and travel professionals asked to change the name as it was a tongue twister, but we stayed with tradition." So glad.
