Sheila King started with Sheen Falls Lodge in December 2004. And never looked back. “Time does fly by when you’re having fun,” says Sheila. “I can’t believe it’s been that long.”
Sheila recently took time to reflect on her longtime sales and marketing career with Sheen Falls. And the path which led her there…
JajofTravel: What sparked your interest in the hospitality field?
SK: I’m from the northwest of Ireland – Co. Roscommon – which is off the beaten tourism track. My family had a lot of relatives living in the US and any time they came home to visit, the red carpet was rolled out – as back then, visits were rare, so everything had to be perfect. I loved the excitement of getting ready for our relatives’ return ‘home’ – anticipating their arrival, organizing activities for them to do and see. I was always intrigued by hotels, guest houses, restaurants and tourism in Ireland. And in time, studied hospitality management in Dublin.
JajofTravel: What do you love most about Sheen Falls?
SK: There is an amazing sense of peace and tranquility about the hotel and its location. We lead such busy lives, running and racing, watching our phones. Sheen Falls Lodge is one of the few places you can switch off.
I love the waterfall – how it is ever-changing. No one wants to see rain in Ireland, but when it comes, you see the waterfall in all its glory. We are so lucky to have Kenmare on our doorstep – it’s where the Irish love to holiday. We have amazing restaurants and cafes, a market once a week, great galleries, and I consider myself truly lucky to live in such a beautiful part of Ireland.
JajofTravel: What’s the best part of your job?
SK: I’m so lucky I have opportunity to travel to amazing places to promote the hotel. But back home, we have an extraordinary team, many of whom have been with Sheen Falls for years. And they make my job much easier – welcoming and looking after guests – when I’m on the road.
JajofTravel: Something about yourself others may not know?
SK: I play the fiddle. I also speak a little French. I’m married to a Frenchman, Jef (although my parents were convinced I’d meet a lovely Kerry farmer). We have two gorgeous boys, Hugo and Tom, ages 6 and 3, who keep me grounded and put everything into perspective. We also have a cat and five hens.
JajofTravel: Any special hobbies or interests?
SK: I love walking and hiking – we are in a great location for that. Also gardening and cooking.
JajofTravel: Three words to describe yourself?
SK: Honest. Caring. Fun.
JajofTravel: Mantra by which you live?
SK: Make the most of each day – life is too short.
