Classic Travel Advisors’ Holly Lombardo is an outdoors enthusiast, nature-and-animal lover – who admittedly loves her ‘creature comforts.’ So Patagonia, in the southern part of Chile – with Tierra Patagonia as her home base – offered the perfect adventure.
“Patagonia is a wild part of the country where space and the horizon appear to be infinite,” says Holly. “The animal life, too, is wild – an ideal sanctuary of puma, fox, falcon, guanacos (a close relative of the alpaca and the llama), nandu (American ostrich) and the condor.”
Holly found Tierra Patagonia “beautiful, with sweeping views of shimmering blue water and snowcapped mountains – and all of the pampering amenities and delectable food experiences you want to enjoy at the end of a long day.”
Of Tierra’s guides – “they are knowledgeable, engaging and very enthusiastic about this place they love so much,” says Holly. “They are eager to share with you the unforgettable experience at Torres del Paine, and I loved that each day you choose from a menu of guided excursions.”
One of Holly’s favorites: a visit to the nearby Estancia Cerro Guido, where an experienced gaucho hand-selected each horse. “Our group had both novice and experienced riders, and each guest was expertly paired with a horse whose temperament made them feel comfortable and confident,” says Holly.
“On our afternoon ride, one of the gauchos asked if I would like to run my horse – to which I replied, `yes.’ With a yelp and a slap, we were off. Galloping across the plains with the snowcapped mountains in the distance, we soon came upon a herd of wild horses. We slowed ours to a stop and watched in wonder as the wild horses began to run, one after the other, circling us and disappearing into the countryside. It felt straight out of a movie.
“Although I personally enjoy hiking, much of the time you are staring at your feet. When riding horseback, your gaze is out at the horizon. All the more reason I personally suggest you consider including a ride at the Estancia.”
As for relaxing – Tierra’s 40 guest rooms display simple elegance, local textiles, a stunning view, and “no clocks, no TVs. Just serenity with a view,” says Holly.
