Always, atVelaa Private Island in the Maldives, I am struck by the interior design. And the resort’s exquisite architectural details.
It’s easy of course to be awed by the island’s natural elements. The turquoise waters, orange-pink sunsets, and swaying palms. But the ‘man-made’ elements are quite noteworthy too.
Velaa means ‘turtle.’ And the ancient sea creature is honored throughout the property – in turtle motifs and original artwork; the colors and patterns of the turtle shell. One of the most amazing design features is seen even before landing. While flying in by private seaplane – the over-water villas are constructed to resemble the head of a turtle; the island its body.
Villas feature beautiful materials. Mahogany. Bamboo lights suspending from lofty ceilings. Glass doors. And playful chairs – some suspended; others refined yet whimsically planted to the ground.
